Does anyone know how to convert gallons per hour to centimeters(or inches) per second?

1 Gal = 231 cubic inches= 3785 cubic centimeters


1 Gal./hr. = 3785 cm^3 / hr.
=> 63.09 cm^3 / min => 1.05 cm^3 / sec.

So 1 Gallon per hour = 1.051 cubic centimeters per second.

Are you converting gallons/hr to velocity, or CUBIC centimeters? In that case you need the pipe size in there too.

Yep, it is to velocity. Thought it wouldn't be that easy.

barryhc, I did download convert.exe, and the my project is a long ways off (hint: it has to do with non-photosynthetic corals and gorgonians)

H-m-m-m-m . . . . So, velocity is "diffused" as the inverse function of flow/distance cubed.

Observation might take care of this.

Hey guys,

Since you guys know your math, perhaps take this information and let me know:in gph!:D

According to Eric Borneman's book, these are some typical flow rates:

-Low Flow = 0.5 - 2 in/sec
-Medium flow = 2.5 - 8 in/sec
-High Flow = 8 - 20 in/sec
-Very High Flow = above 20 in/sec

And these are some typical flows in different areas of the reef:

-Reef Crest, fast currents, wave surge = 3 - 13 in/sec at times up to 3 ft/sec
-Lagoon = 0.5 - 6 in/sec
-Deep Fore Reef (deeper than 82ft) >2 in/sec
-Mid to deep fore reef = 2 - 3 in/sec
-Shallow fore reef = 3.5 - 6 in/sec

Need to know the cross-sectional area of the flow in order to determine the volume. Ocean currents easily run in the cubic feet per second.
