Maybe DUMB Question

What do the little envelope pictures to the left mean on all of the threads. Mine always is closed with a dot, some are open and blue etc.

What does this mean?

I think that an open envelope shows new messages...a closed one has no new messages since you lat logged on, and the black dot is one that you replied to....I think.
