can i test my alk with my test kit from my swimmig pool or do i have to buy a kit for salt water? it reads" parts per million is expressed as calcium carbonate" if so what should it be in ppm?

Dunno, try and see (don't dump it back into the tank when your done though)! You'll need to divide your result by 50 to get meq/l. I would expect a value of 5.0 meq/l or less (if you don't add buffer or dose b-ionic or kalk or use a calcium reactor, I would expect it to be under 3.0 meq/l).
