I got this scolymia two days ago and it still hasn't opened yet. Is this normal? I have it on the sand and with med. flow around it. Can anyone give me some ideas please.

Was it receding this bad when you got it? No one is going to be able to give you any answers at all without a lot more info on your system. What are you water parameters? Lighting, filtration, feeding? Have you fed it anything? That is a lot of recession for two days.

Well this is how it was when I took it out of the bag after i bought it.
I have 3 250 MH
param:
ph = 8.3
Nitrite = .25
nitrate = 10
phosphate = 0
SG = 1.025
Calcium = 420
Alk = 9.6
Mag = 1110

Did it look like this before you bought it, or did you buy it sight unseen? Even a healthy one can take a while to open up when you change environments on it. It looks like it has good color, so just leave it alone for another couple of days and see what happens.

Bought it from the LFS and they just got it. Others where interested so I thought I would just take it then. Should I move it to where there is very little flow or less light?

IME they seem to like a med. lighting and light to light med flow. As long as the flesh isn't plastered to the skeleton once it is open it should be fine. Your parameters should be fine. Since it was like this when you bought it I would just wait for it to open up and then start feeding it lightly. They don't like to be moved around alot. good luck. They recover nicely so I think you should be able to recover it.

Did you get that when you came down to West Palm, it looks like it will be nice when it opens up. Put it in low flow, low light in the sandbed for now.

I totally forgot it was Sunday, it was probably Tropical Fantaseas that was open.

Yes and although it was a nice place they didn't have much of a selection at the time.

It's all about timing as I'm sure you know, I've found some really nice pieces there including my yellow leather when it was a wee boy.

How do these do with Nitrite? I see you have a low measurement and some trates as well..

Nitrites are bad for anything if you have nitrites you need to find out what's causing it and fix it. Most corals can handle a reasonable amount of nitrates but some such as SPS will have better coloring and do better with lower nitrates.

How do I go about finding out the cause? Any recommendations?

I had one of those and it would periodically close up like that for a day or two. I had it a couple years and gave it to another club member and it continues to look great. I dont know if he has the same closure problem with it I did or not.

Yeah I am just going to wait it out. On the other hand, I am trying to figure out what is causing my high nitrate levels. How can I figure out the cause? Gregg I know you said you feed allot, do you not have this issue?

I have nitrates around 5-10 all of the time because I feed so much, that isn't really considered high so I think you're good there. I would test your nitrites somewhere else to make sure that it's right.

Any ideas though on how I could find the cause of my nitrates? I do at times have it hight than that.
