i soon will be adding another refugium to my setup, it will be located aprox 10 feet below the main display
what size pump would you reccommend i use to maintain about 800 gph.

i dont want to throttle the pump back with ball valves into the tank, but will divert water from the return back into the refugium if the flow is too much

i would go with a mag 7 only because the mag 9 may have to be throttled down just a touch...

You'll need either a Mag 18 or Mag 24, or an equivelant brand.

a t-4 or t-5, or maybe a mag 12 or 18

im thinking a mag 18, its alittle more than i need, but i would like to add alittle flow to the fuge sections (dual fuge) by "teeing" a gate valve from the main return line to the 2 sections, and adjusting the flow using gate valves into each section, if the flow was still too much in the fuge sections, i could split them again after the valves
still kickin ideas around....

don't forget to take into account head loss due to elbows and such. You may want to consider spa hose instead of elbows and 45's if and where you need to change direction. Also, Mag drives, from what I have read are actually meant to be submerged although they do work externally. I have a Mag 18 with 5 foot of head and running it submerged. That would not be my first choice of pump if I were to run from my basement to my display although I'm looking at 14' of rise at 20'+ horizontal. But then again I'm all about "more power". Is this going to be the only return pump or in addition to another?

Jerry, I still have that Iwaki 40MDRLXT (Japanese motor), In case you're still looking. It's 1200gph @ 4 foot I think. Too strong for my application with a 20 gallon sump. PM me if you want it. It still sitting in the second room next to my non-motile weight-bench :D

Oh yeah, the Iwaki never ran with salt water, I probably used it for like FOUR 10 minute wet-tests when I first setup my tank and was testing out the plumbing. I decided to go with the Iwaki 20 since it was quieter for the living room, and the water wasn't cascading everywhere in my sump.

I would definitely go with a GEN X PCX40/MAK4 pump. Below is a link to it. It runs externally, is quiet and also only draws 110 watts. It is also reletively in enxpensive and it alot better flow at 10' and better power usage than a MAG 18 pump. I have used both pumps and i would never go back to a mag pump as it adds heat to your tank also.

Jer1198,

I have sent you a PM with PayPal information regarding the Iwaki pump you said you will take. You have yet to respond. I awaiting payment. Please respond.

I would double-check on that Iwaki 40. I don't think that would give you 800gph at 10 feet of head, even if it was a perfectly straight shot up with the pipe.

The iwaki will not get the desired flow. Just an FYI...

Those data sheets had me rather confused. How can that pump... rated at 1200gph... have only 800gph output at 0 feet?! I went looking into that myself as I'm planning a return from my basement to my main on the first floor and will need something to take the return up to about 12'. I was disappointed with the Iwaki specs...

OK OK before you guys bash the company...........

Iwaki has 2 types within 2 types of motors. They have "American" motored pumps and "Japanese" motored pumps. The Japanese motored pumps are supposedly "more" reliable than the latter, as some people can testify to some of their equipment running for 6-7+ years constant. This is what I've read, that's why I have the Japanese motored Iwakis (plus I don't want to go through pumps more than I have to)

On the other "other", there are also 2 versions of these pumps. Pressure rated and standard. The pressure rated pumps are perfect for closed loops with eductor use as well as return pump use from a lower level, like a basement. The standard ones are good for a shorter run, like under the cabinet sump return and incorporates a lot more flow per hour. I also believe there is a difference in inlet/outlet size between the pressure rated and standard.

Hope this clears some questions.

Phyl,
That Iwaki 40 model on the reef.org flow sheet is not the "XT" model, which is the one offered up on this thread. The non-"X" model in those specs has a lower flow rate.

Thank you for clearing that up... I knew it had to make more sense than I could make out of it!

You looking for an external pump. How about the Amp300. I'd have ck the spec on it but the one i had seemed to be good.

I THINK I WOULD RATHER GO WITH SUBMERSIBLE, LIKE A MAG 18 OR 24 BUT NOT SURE

Mag 18/24 is going to do a number on your water temperature. A 12 raises mine enough to not even want to think of a 24... You won't notice until the summer hits... I'd rethink that. I definitely won't use a mag when I go through the floor.
