My wife woke me up to tell me that our Cardinal fish just spit out 4 babys. Really cool. About 3/8 of an inch long each. Spike (our 12-inch serpent star) was going after them so we fished them out and stuck them in the refugium. I think one of them didnt survive the move but the others look OK.

Does anyone know what we should do next?

No, but I think somebody in the fish breeding forum could help. Very exciting, good luck to ya!

Help.

4 more fry showed up in the display tank this morning.

Anyone know how to cross-post to the fish-breeding forum?

I'd suggest reading this first.

It was written about Banggai, is that what you have?

If it were mine, I'd move the male to the 'fuge and see if he spits anymore out. Can you see the babies' eyes peering out of his mouth?

Also, start a batch of brine shrimp eggs going as soon as possible.

Yes they are Banggai. I didnt think to look in the mouth of the fish to see any more.

How common is it for this to happen?

it is very common for banggais to release fry in your main tank, problem is you have to scoop out the fry, else you'll have very low survival rates.
As posted, please read that article on banggai keeping, I wrote it in 1997, so the data and how-tos are accurate, just need to be updated.
Also consider doing a google search for a number of online articles on banggai cardinalfish breeding.
Start your brine shrimp cultures as well.
best of luck

I found and read the artical this morning. It came up on a Google search. Good information!

Luckily our refugium is loaded with pods, mysis, and brine shrimp, of every size.

Oh, my wife just called and said that she scooped 8 more out of the main tank this afternoon.

typical brood sizes are 21-25 babys, so you still may have more coming, or you may be missing them in the main tank. I had broods from 16-28 so it does vary...

Good luck with them.. Franks article got me through the beginning and still holds true today...

ps. congratulations pappa!
