Howdy,

I've got a couple different types of algae growing in my tank that I can't identify. I'd just like to know so I can take steps to reduce any of this if I learn it's harmful.

The below picture is of a plant-like thing that's growing from some of my live rock. Sorry it's blurry. Any one know what this is?

This second picture (below) is more of a concern to me. It's all over my live rock in many places. It looks like a blackish/purplish felt covering the rock in place.

My last question is about an algae that's growing on the glass in my tank. I think it might be green hair algae... It looks like a bunch of tiny little green arm hairs growing on the inside of the tank.

Any tips are much appreciated!

-Bobby

The stuff in the first picture looks like Halimeda but I can't say 100% because it is so out of focus. It is definately a Caulerpalean green alga. I think the stuff in the second picture is cyanobacteria, too. Do you test your phosphates? Cyanobacteria love phosphates.

Is the red/brown stuff easily removed from the rocks? In your picture it's hard to tell, but looks alot like a couple of patches that I have that are a felt looking encrusting algae of some sort.

Definitely not cyano in my case, but again, I can't tell very well from your picture.

The green looks like Halimeda to me, but again difficult to tell without a clearer picture.

Ok, I'll try to take some better pictures once my tank clears up (I just moved some live rock around) My test kit doesn't test for phosphates. I'll pick one up pronto.

The brownish/puple stuff comes right off the rocks with ease.

you know, if theres algae in the tank, the phosphate may not show up ithe tank. the algae uses it, making it undetectable.

that first pic sure looks like halimeda to me. if it is leave it there, its a good algae.

it is a good indicator of tank conditions..

Here's a couple more shots. I can't seem to get a clear shot of the weird plant-thing...
