Whats this Tree Branch?

I got this thing that looks like a tiny tree growing out of my Zoo rock.Its been growing so I know it not a dead feather duster.Its a dark red/maroon color.

looks like some sort of micro algae. is it hard like stone, or soft like a plant?

Its a little fragile,A peice broke off when I used a turkey baster to blow off some detritus.Its growing rather large now and I still can't find out what it is.
