I had a large (8-10") regal in a 110g that I used to have. It didnt seem to mind it at all but I did send him to a bigger home. You can keep them in any size tank until they get to big for them.

and it takes a long time to get that big and chances are if you get to love the fish you will upgrade to the 6 footer.

WOW a 36 foot tank :) I think you must mean 36" (3 foot) and I doubt very much that your regal is 2' (2 foot) long.

The yellow or purple tang should be fine.

I think that the tang police might even let you keep two or three tangs in a 36' tank, but I'm not 100% sure.

You've never met the tang police then.

I've got a 3-year old purple tang in my 4' long 90 gallon tank. No problems. As long as I give him seaweed evry other day, he is very happy!

i'm working on plans on a 4'x4'x2' cube. i think i might be able to keep 1 or 2 in a 270 gallon tank.

Those will be four very unhappy Tangs and probably battled scarred Tangs
The tank could support one Tang maybe two if they are of different body types and very young when you get them I wouldn't go any further though.
Tangs are fighters, if they feel they are fighting for space it can get nasty.
I've seen yellows beat the crap out of each other at LFS because there where too many in the tank,Nasty!

naw i just kidding about the other tangs listed there... was thinking about maybe a purple with the regal in the 110G... the powder if i ever get a large tank would be the only tang in that tank... i find tangs really beautiful and of course want to provide the best for them (up to what i can support financially at least)

i think you can keep tangs for a while in a 4 foot tank. i saw a naso in a 120 that had been in their 4 years it was only about 5 in
i believe in a 8 foot tank tangs will fight as well especially yellow tangs thats just thier nature. so. opinions are debatable . some have luck with niger triggers being doscile and some have reported that thier niger killed every fish in the tank.
and some say thier tang was munching on thier coral.
so who do you believe.

now personally i think sohals shouldnt even be sold in the aquarium industry. ive never heard anyone keeping those for like 5-10 years without them dominating the tank to death. hopefully somebody can prove me wrong
