I used my old 29gal tank as a sump/fuge for my new 55gal fowlr. I know that this is not a perfect set up but will it at least work? I know this is not a great pic but you can tell where I am going with my plan.

any suggestion?

more importantly will it work?http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/94669BIG_SUMP.JPG

I can't see any reason it won't work, but the devil is in the details. I'd be careful with antisiphon holes. Will you have an overflow box, or just a drilled hole with a screen?

the tank is already drilled and has the pipe comeing out. I never even thought about a screen to keep criters out! and I will have a hole right above the water level on the return line in the display tank.

Sounds fine. I'd try get get an overflow box in the tank to do surface skimming, but that might not be practical for you. Also, I'd have more than one antisiphon hole. Nothing like backups!

Well I made it and it works good!! Now I need to find something to put in it. What kinds of algea do others use? Sould I use mud or sand? What kind of criters?

What about the lights on the sump. Should they be on all day, same as display, or opposite of display?

any suggestions are appreciatedhttp://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/94669Sep12208.JPG

your tank looks lopsided to the left! hopefully just bad camera angle?

macro algae:

Chateomorpha,
Gracelaria,
Maidens hair,
Ulvula (sea lettuce); (hopefully I spelled it right)
Caulerpa......many kinda, never Taxiofolia...and most can be coral inhibators with a toxin they produce called Caulerpin.

good luck
Dave

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like your water level in the sump is high. Have you checked to see how much water goes into your sump when the power is out? It looks like it will overflow when the power is out.
