hello all,

i recently moved from michigan to washington where i maintained a 29 gallon(glass) fish and live rock tank with relatively few problems. i used a store-bought hang-on filter and regular flourescent light. i also have a 5 gallon (glass) tank sitting around. well, when i unpacked my stuff i found that my filter no longer works. Is it possible to build an efficient filtration system with the things i already have or could get relatively cheap at a local hardware store. preferably something that could eventually support a coral tank (when i can afford to get the necessary lighting). i would greatly appreciate some feedback. ive tried looking at some other postings but all the jargon is still over my head, i kind of need a responce tailored to my ignorance of the field.

thanks for the help

I use live rock, a protein skimmer, and macroalgae to do filtration. I wouldn't use a hang-on filter except to run carbon.
