Has anyone ever heard of mercury vapor lighting and is it possible to use over a reef?

MV is not adequate for a reef tank. For starters the kelvin rating is about 4k. It will give you constant algae. Also for a 55 gallon, it may be too much. In a 55 you can do very good with just compacts. Unless you want clams or sps.
I used MV a long time ago, NO, compacts and MH for the last 18 months, and MH is what I like best among all.
