Dave, you mentioned you knew of a supplier for those little plastic mounts you found at HD. Something to the order of $0.50/ea at HD but MUCH less if we order like 1000 from the supplier. Can you confirm prices and quantities?

Those things work great in egg crate and when you go to mount them you can trim them down to 1/8-1/4" and fill with epoxy then superglue and they seem to really stick better than any coral-epoxy-rock-epoxy-rock mount that I've tried. Also much less time for the coral to encrust to the actual base rock which I've found is the key to the coral's survival and quicker growth from the tips once it's encrusted.

Yep, I agree, they are a great mount for frags. The reason corals encrust fast on them is the texture. I can order them for something like $17.77/thousand (1.8 cents each), but there is a $50 minimum order, so I never ordered them. If there's enough interest, we could get an order together. Not sure if I prefer the 1/2" ones or the 9/16" ones, though. Would have to do a little more testing...

Geez, didn't realize there was this much interest. Put down how many you want, and if we can make 3000, I'll order them. Probably out to figure on $0.02 each to cover the shipping cost. Please, no requests less than 250 pieces.

I don't have a picture or a link right now, but can get one soon. Also, they come standard in black, but I can also probably get them in white (may be more costly, though).

Don- I think you're thinking of floral spikes; these are not the same. Below is a pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/commiphora/frags/plug.jpg
They are made of nylon and have tabs on the sides to "lock" them into eggcrate. 1/2" is a loose fit, 9/16" is tight. The price I quoted was for 1/2", don't know what the price is on 9/16" yet. I'll need to pick up a few at HD first to make sure they'll work before ordering them. Anyway, waynesworld, PM me for direct contact info (you want enough to meet the minimum order w/ the mfgr)

$17.77 doesn't include shipping; that's why I said figure on 2 cents apiece. Also, I'm not going to count them out, so 250 means you'll get approx. 1/4 bag, 500 1/2 bag, etc. UNLESS someone has a scale to weigh them.

Latest info:

9/16" $20.34/1000, or $19.45/1000 for 5000+ pieces in stock
1/2" $20.87/1000 (breaks at >2000 pieces), 6 week lead time

Shipping standard UPS, figure about $8 for shipping. So, the price breakdown is as follows (9/16" piece, not sure if that is what we'll order until I check it in the eggcrate):

3000 pieces, $0.0231 each
5000 pieces, $0.0211 each

Did you ever get a chance to see if 9/16 would work or not? I'll do cooridination the easy way, 5000 pcs and divy up later unless we have a 6 week lead time for 1/2".

I think it was 6 wks. on the 9/16, but don't have the info handy now. I never got the 9/16 at Lowes to see how they would fit, but seem to recall it was pretty tight before. 1/2 is snug if the plastic locks are rotated correctly, otherwise it falls out easily. Sorry, just swamped at the moment.

Dave, according to your earlier post it was 6 wks for the 1/2". I'll send you an email and take over this order. Where, at Lowes, would I find these things? I'll stop by tomorrow and get one of each to try them out, then I'll post which works best.

My plan to simplify cooridination is to buy 5000 and give everyone a week or so to sort out quantities fairly. I may not be able to get +2000 to one person unless it's one person from mtrc that's willing to distribute to their local members. I'd prefer that way if possible.

At Lowes in the specialty hardware bins. They're called nylon hole plugs.

Did I miss out on these or did this idea just fall by the wayside? I still need some so if this thread just died I'll volunteer to head it up if someone could furnish me with the ordering info.

If you missed, then I missed too Art. I was just thinking about these yesterday and wondered what had happened!

Keep me in for 1000, I can do 2000 if needed...

I haven't gotten any of the order info yet, but have been doing some checking myself. I found a import company that I may be able to make an order from at $.02 ea. The only catch is I may have to buy more that the club could ever use.

In the mean time I found packs of 50 at Shields Electric on Middlebrook Pike for $6.50.

I would love to get in on this order also fro $15 dollars worth or so so guess that is about 750.

I'm in chattanooga so if someone could mail the 1k to me i can distribute the 250 reefernoob wanted to him.

Paypal works best for me if that is ok for payment.

How many is that? My brother is in CO reef clubs and he wanted some too so we may be able to get a lot. I thaught they were less or that price in the other spot in the thread?
