I have used both ASM and AquaC, in my experience, there is much less messng with the ASM to keep it skimming well.

do you remember which was quieter?

I would say that neither of them are noisy. I run a G3 now and do not notice any sort of noise from it.

They are both good skimmers.

I have a RedSea Berlin Classic skimmer never used. $100.00. If not interested go with the AquaC.

I have an asm g3 it works great, and even better with the recirc mod and gate valve. Never used the Aqua c but the lfs has one and they never seem to have it adjusted correctly, cause it is never producing any new skimmate in the cup.

They both are great skimmers. I have the Aqua-C Remora which is the hang on back skimmer & it works great. I have heard great reviews on both of these brands. Don't believe you could go wrong with either one.

spankerbob, did you do the recirc mod yourself? I've looked into the mods, but didn't understand how they improved performance...Also, doesn't the gate valve make it noisier?

I have an AquaC EV150. It is a great skimmer IMO. Takes a fairly small pump (Rio 2100 currently), and does a really good job. Easy to setup if you read the directions before you setup it up and use it for a couple of years (don't ask me how I know that :) ).

Yes i did the mod myself it took a total of 45min, it included the gate valve mod, the recirc mod, direct entrance mod from tank. It improves performance by now tanking water directly from tank via overflow in to the main body of the skimmer, then the sedra sucks the dirty water that is captured in the small space of the main body and adds air to it with no power loss in the pump, it also suck in the larger air bubbles and rechops them. It really does work, it makes foam easier to manage from wet to dry and just the over waste export does improve.

spankerbob,

did you use uniseals for the recirculation? if so, what size did you go with?

I just replaced my AquaC with an ASM. There is no comparison. AquaCs are very hard to keep adjusted and a good part of the time they don't skim anything at all. They stop for hours after feeding and such.

The ASM just skims like crazy without adjustments. I am pulling out 1-2 cups of skimmate a day. The AquaC didn't pull that out in a week.

By the way, You need 1" uniseals.

I've got a EV-180 and a euroreef CS5-2 and the euroreef needs far less adjustment and messing with than the Aqua. If you get the Aqua get 1 size bigger pump then they recommend. Then use the air valve to adjust skimmate wet or dry.

Doesn't ASM use extruded? I would be worried over time if that is true.
