View Full Version : Standpipe got noisy, could 470gph be too much?

The standpipe in our 20 long was virtually silent at first, but after a week of the tank running we found it to get louder and louder. Now it does a constant fill up then gurgle, fill up then gurgle. I have tried using all sorts of different grates on top of the standpipe and right now it has a 1" slip bulkhead on it. I need to know if maybe our problem is the 470gph that the return pump is returning to the tank from the sump. I know 1" bulkheads are rated at 600gph but maybe the standpipe is catching too much water and gurgling to fix it? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
-Chris

Did you drill a small hole in the top of the stand pipe to allow air into the tube?

insert an airline tube deep into the standpipe, this should silence it

Tried the airline thing it just gurgles more because the airline takes air out of the water. This is NOT a durso standpipe. The standpipe we are using looks like this... http://fish.conceyted.com/images/DSC00624.jpg

I just drilled something like this... http://fish.inhabitance.com/DSC00944small.jpg

It works better than the bulkhead for some reason. I am going to go drill a different piece right now to try round holes instead of slits. We shall see.

I drilled a section of 1" piping full of holes. The pipe still made just as much noise. I spoke with rick from ricks reef out here in new orleans and he told me that there is plastic gutter gaurd that comes in a roll and you can roll it up somewhat and use that as your strainer for the standpipe and quiet it down. He showed me one on one of his tanks and it worked perfectly on his. He told me lowe's carried it so I went there and could not find the stuff. Went to Home Depot and they dont have it either. I cant seem to find the gutter guard anywhere. Meanwhile I will just use the 1" pvc that I cut slits into. It quiets it down a good bit but the water still seems to go up and down creating the gurgle/toilet sound.

Help if you have anything to add please.

It replaces the bulkhead screen.

oh i see,, i wonder if that would work in the top of a 90, that comes out of a bulkhead on the back of the tank???

My bulkhead is actually on the bottom of my tank. I got my tank drilled on the bottom. If your bulkhead is on the back a 90 degree elbow is all you need to mimic what i got.

i'm thinking you mean put that inside/on top of the elbow???? right????

i'll try it tomorrow.. how did you make those cuts????

i found the gutter guard at both Lowes and HD here, it was in the roofing/lumber area.....
thanks,,,lisa

thanks,,,lisa I made the cut using a dremel. Does the gutter guard work at quieting down the pipe?

i rolled a piece of gutter guard up and inserted it into my 90's but i noticed no difference in the noise..still sounds like a sink draining.....
so,,, i'm going to try your way...

i'm also going to add internal overflow boxes so i can turn the 90 down, that should get rid of the noise,, i hope!!

good luck,,lisa

Try inserting a rigid 1/4 inch pipe from the top to about 3/4 of the way down the standpipe and see if that helps.

I have tried things like that and I think it backed up my entire system and tried to overflow my aquarium. Hope you guys can figure out how to fix yours, I am happy with this. Every once in a while it will gurgle for a second and a big bubble will knock it out of place. So, I surrounded the top cap with 3 zip ties and the zip ties now extend over the standpipe to keep it in place even if it is moved.

You made a Hofer Gurgle Buster (HGB)... kinda. Take a look at this website: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/domitron2/HGB/HGB.html
it might help you a little...

do you think the HGB can be used on top of the 90 inside of the tank???

I would recommend building a Durso standpipe. My standpipe was very noisey and I built a durso pipe for about $5. It takes 15 min to build and 30 min to find all of the parts at Home Depot. My standpipe is now almost silent. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

can you use something like that if your tank is drilled in the back glass??
thanks,,lisa
