Hello Anthony,

I am currently using an Amiracle wet/dry filter with the bio balls removed as a sump. I have approx. 10 lbs. of live rock and no filters what so ever in the sump. My question is "Should I be using a filter sock or some kind of mechanical filtration and if so how is the live rock in the refugium fed if the water is run through a filter sock before it enters?"
I purchased my entire system used, and when I set it up my goal was to keep it as "natural" as possible.
The tank is a 100 gal. AGA with a 4" DSB and 200 lbs. live rock.
sump is 24" x 13" and skimmer is a Life Reef SVS23 powered by an Iwaki 30RLXT. Iwaki 40RLXT returns water from 2 life reef over flow boxes.
Bio load is as fallows,
6" sail fin tang
6" passer angel
4" purple tang
1 cleaner wrasse
2 blue damsels
1 LN hawkfish
2 True Percs
1 dart fish
+ cleaner crew and a couple of LPS and softies.

When I picked up the tank, it had a large filter sock in the sump, along with a foam block under the center baffle and a foam block in each overflow box. I took them all out thinking it was the cause of the high nitrate levels.

Thanks for any input
