I now understand the frustration of rio pumps...
just had my rio 2500hh explode in my sump it used to run my
amiracal quad pass skimmer. ( it may be a crap skimmer but it pulls stuff out)
what do you think i should replace it with ??
mag 7? or another rio time bomb? :blown: :uzi: RIO

saltwaterfishlover,

I assume the pump failed due to overheating, which seams to be a common gripe with them. I hope it wasn't disastrous.

Rio is a common OEM pump, frequently supplied with skimmers. I'm not sure if we hear about failures because so many have been sold or they actually have a higher failure rate than other pumps. I have not seen actual incriminating data, just anecdotal information.

I've had a RIO 600 RVT on my CPR bak-pak skimmer for over 4 years now. I've replaced the impeller around a year ago, cost me about $6 mail-order. Some RIO models now are UL listed. The retailers I've asked (local and mail-order) say the failure rates and returns they experience for Rio's are no different than other brands.

FWIW, I'm running a mag 7 for my sump. Best bang for the buck in that size pump, bought it mail-order for about $50.

Most RIO's dont have a UL listing because they dont have an overload device. Meaning if something gets jammed in them they wont heat up and shut off they'll heat up and burn out.
