View Full Version : Quarentining Sand

Just went through a major tank crash after trying to rid my tank of cyano with EM. (Long story so I won't get into it.) I did get rid of my cyano along with some other things I didn't want to. I figure it would be a good idea to replenish the DSB because I'm sure I did some damge to it. However, with everything I went through I don't want to add any cyano back. So how can I make sure I don't? Will keeping some live sand in the dark for a few days kill any cyano? Or will it kill all the good stuff too? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Quarantining is a good idea, but not to keep cyanobacteria from getting into your tank. Even after the Erythromycin treatment, there is probably some resistent cyano in there somewhere. That is the bad news. The good news is it is easily controlled by keeping nutrients low along with brisk water movement.

What is the best method for quarantining and what benefits are there if it doesn't eliminate cyano?
