I am putting together a refugium sump setup. I will have 2 inlets on each side of the the tank. There will be a section with protein skimmer in it on one side then the sump in the center with the refugium an the other end. On the low volume inlet that supplies
the refugium, I am making a small section to hold either live rock or bio-balls, just before the DSB and Macro Algae. What would you choose?

Will the section be complete submerged? If so BioBall won't do much good. Also, what are you planning to keep in the tank if you do have bio balls?

initial reaction is live rock.

LR best or rubble, bioballs float and stuff gets in them.

I could make it so it is not submerged, my initial thought was to put live rock in submerged compartment. I will have mixed corals, mostly sps, heavily stocked with a good amount of fish. I have seen quite a few refugium sump setups with bio balls and wondered if it was more beneficial.

Bio balls are more a pain than anything else. There is nothing in the bioballs other than gunk and some bacteria.

Thanks Fonchy, that was kind of what I had thought.
