ok i bought a skimmer.. amiracle skimmer,, my question is.. you know those filters that come with new tanks you buy in a store for freshwater.. can you do away with that for saltwater as long as u have a skimmer?

I would use the skimmer with the HOB as a combo...

1. For extra circulation. Unless you have other means for circulation...
2. Fou can run carbon in the HOB

My opinion.. Just leave it there...

yes you can as long as you have enough live rock to pick-up the biological filtration. According to Dr. Ron, all you should really need is a good skimmer with enough live Rock plus L. sand for the tank.
Also, make sure you have ample water movement via powerheads.
how big is your tank?
reef or fish only?
you could use the power filter for now, it won't hurt anything.

i have a 30 gal tank.. 10 lbs of live rock, and skimmer plus a 301 powerhead that on full blast..

I just thought the filter would be a bit too much

Everything that dymaxiun said. I'd like to add that I have two Aquaclear 500's on my 125 along with my Remora Pro skimmer. Just make sure you clean them every other month or so.
