View Full Version : Which is a better powerhead attachement?

I just added a new powerhead to the lower portion of my tank. Instead of just blowing straight in one spot I wanted to create a moving current. I found these two attachments and wanted to know which would be better.

The first is the Hydor BIOFLO Aerobic filter and the second is an oscillator. And I also need to be sure it will work on a RIO 900.
Thanks.

I have no idea about either. Sorry. But what IS that stuff around the powerhead in the 1st pic? Is that some kind of filter media?
If so, I would take that off prior to installing it. JMO.

Where is that oscillator from? - I'd like to try it attatched to my return.
I have two of the Hydors, attatched to two Penguin 550 powerheads those penguins are weak, I think like 195 gph, but they are great with the hydors, it seems to create random flow when they "cross streams" with the return flow. or the maxijets.

The sponge on the Flo seems to just collect detritus/debris. It also slows down performance. The Flo comes with a set of four attachments, I'm sure one of them will fit on your Rio.
I am a big fan of the Hydor Flo, but I have no experience with the second option. If you do decide to use the Flo, I would remove the sponge.

I just got one of those hydor deflectors and I am very happy with it. It makes sense that corals and such prefer a random current than the straight blast from regular powerheads.

The first one is a keeper without the sponge. They call it an Aerobic filter so they intend it to grow beneficial bacteria like bio balls. Scrap the filter you dont need it.
I know a few coral farmers who use the first option.

<giggle> Interesting Aquaclear...
Not being insulting - I'm assuming you took that as a stock photo and didn't do it yourself (it seems almost airbrushed).
Here's perhaps another option for you:

It would work best in conjunction would some sort of wavemaker timer, but there's a clever way to oscillate currents.
