No experience with GARF, but I have never been happier with a tank before. NO skimmer, either.

The coarse grunge isn't very useful, IMO. It contains larger amphipods and copepods and the like, but not much else, according to one analysis.

I'd go with some stuff from billsreef.com, ipsf.com, or the kits from inlandaquatics.com. There are other vendors as well, though.
