hey guys,

i'm looking to plumb a scwd to my mag 350 at about 4'-5'. do you think this will create too much pressure on the unit?

i was looking to do something like melev's...

http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html

btw, does anyone know the GPH rating for the magnum 350?

A mag 350 pumps 350 gal/hr but would be reduced significantly at 4-5 feet of head. Even on a very small tank that would not be enough to get the effect you want from a SCWD. What size tank do you have and is it SPS or softies or a combo? Melev is running a Mag 7 on his 29 gallon with about 2 feet of head, which gives him about 550 gal/hr flow.

I really question the 350gph of that canister with media.
I own one and my XP3 rated at 350gph, pushed more water.

29 mixed, pushing at most 4' of head (more likely 2', just like melev).

i think melev was running a mag5 initially then moved up to the mag 7. mag3 has the same flow rate so i was wondering if anyone ever set up a mag3 with a SCWD.

also, what do you guys think about plumbing in a return manifold to a scwd?

Ive got a mag 18 running through my scwd with about 2 feet of head and to tell you the truth it really isn't that forceful. I don't think a 350 would do much.

The only concern I would have is if the SCWD quit working and the flow to the tank was stopped which could cause your sump to over flow. Not sure if that is possible on your system but I like the closed loop idea better.

We have a Magnum 350 canister filter, and I'll tell you that there likely isnt enough pressure to either make the SCWD work properly, or if there was, not enough to make it worth it. The return of ours goes up about 4' and you can place your thumb over the output without too much effort and it stops. They really arent pressure rated, and dont do that well with head pressure.

that's precisely the thing... you can't have too much pressure in the line or you'll break the SCWD... 5 psi max, right?

plus, i don't think i'll have it go 4' up. i have a mag 350 running in a 75 FO tank right now and it moves the water at a pretty good rate at about 2'.

how about the return manifold idea? would 1'-1.5' returns work better?
