New to halides and want to only buy them once so any and all opinions welcome. My tank is 100g 72x18x18 and I want to go with either 3x400w xm 15k or 3x250w 10ks with 4x96 actinic pc suppliment. I already have the 4 pc's, but I need to know if one setup would cost less to run in either electric bills or replacement bulbs. I am leaning towards the 3x400w but only for the bigger is better mantra not for any factual reason. Would this be too much light for soft as well as stony corals and clams? Sean

Too much for softies, especially in an 18" deep tank. Awesome for SPS and clams though.

If you got only 2x 400w, then it would leave some shaded areas in the tank, in which you could place softies if you like.

BTW, [welcome]

most of the softies will apperciate the 400s as much as anything else.. They just need to be acclimated to the light. IMO, its pretty hard to have too much light. With proper aquascaping, you can create areas for corals that will not like as much light
