I just purchased an Aquasafe RO system. To completely fill my resevoir tank the system is putting off no less than 5 gallons waste water. That seems extremely excessive. What are others experience with that? Also, after three complete runs my TDS reading directly out of my membrane is 60. When can I expect that to drop? Shoud I keep running it through, filling up and emptying the tank until it reads satisfactory?

What is your water pressure? Are you on city water or well water?

It does sound like a pressure issue to me too.

Also, what is your TDS out of the tap?

a 4 to 1 ratio of waste/good water is normal, sometimes you
can get a 3:1 ratio.

I have not checked my water pressure but plan to tonight. I wanted to fill up my resevoir one more time. I am on city water. What is it that indicated it might be a pressure problem? Too high of pressure or too low? TDS out of the tap is about 215. So I understand the ratio, is that 4 gallons of waste water to every 1 gallon of RO water?

you need about 40-45 PSI to run properly, i kicked my well pump
up to 65 PSI for better results. and yup, 4 gallons of waste to 1
gallon usable. that's why some people pipe the waste to their
washing machines or irrigation, so it's not totally 'waste' water.

Wow, I had no idea it would be that much waste. I have a 4.4 gallon resevoir so that could add up. I'll figure out something to do with it so it is not a complete waste. I have all kinds of plants that will love it. What happens with low pressure?

the water isn't forced thru the RO membrane and you get even more waste IIRC. temp also plays a role too, 74*-76* being optimal.

i know it sounds obvious, but make sure your flush valve is closed too... :)
