After much consideration I decided on a saddleback as the type clown I wanted.

After several trips to various lfs I found and bought this little guy

He is about 1 3/4 inches and eating great.

The lfs wanted a bit more for him as they said he is a "hybrid".

Either way, plain saddleback or hybrid he is great!

Wanted to see what the clown gurus id him as and share his cuteness.

Thanks!

I'm no clown guru but that looks to me like a Papua New Guinea variant A. Polymnus (saddleback). It's neither a "plain" nor "hybrid" saddleback. but it is great looking.

Reeferee,

I think fishnwishn hit the correct ID. There was a big thread here a few months back about a vendor selling those clowns as "Rare" species. He was trying to get close to $200 for the pair (papua clown thread) (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=529014) . I really like the colors on them and I am not sure if they are hard to come by, but the price on liveaquaria.com would suggest that they are relatively common. I wish I had a source around here for them.

ficklefins and FishnWishn.

This guy cost $20.00 bucks and ate like crazy when they feed him upon request.

The same store has a fully grown "black" saddleback (not for sale/ in the main reef display) that they raised from a small size and they claim he did not look like the one I bought when he was small.

Thank you both for the quick I.D.

One more pic a little better perhaps

$20 bucks! I can't get a regular clown for that. My latest Yellow barred maroon cost $30. If they thought that it was rare i think thye would jack the price, My LFS has an Austrailan Saddleback? I think and it is going for $150 alone.

Reeferee,

Good price on that little clown. I went out to a LFS and say one just like it and they look even better in real life. Is it a single clown, or does it have a partner?

pad and ficklefins, FWIW there is stiff competiton on the far SW side of Houston by numerous stores. This particular store was selling tank bred clowns for 7.99

They did have a pair of saddlebacks that looked like mine (I believe it was a pair as one was smaller than the other, but not positive ie. they were not with an anemone, rather they were with other species of clowns) for 7.99 each. I passed on them as they were not eating that great.

The brown saddlebacks on LiveAquaria are not the some color variant as the Papua saddlebacks like Reeferee's. One of our LFSs had quite a few small ones for about $15 last weekend.
