View Full Version : Any benefits of living near the coast (around LA area)?

So being driving distance to the coast around LA, I was wondering if there is any benefit to having the ocean so close (regarding out ranks that is).

I believe all the fish and inverts from our coast are used to temperatures far too cold to put in our reef tanks right?

But is there anything that would be desirable to put our warmer reef tanks <mine is kept at 81-83 deg. F>? What about live food for our fish? Can copepods or any other goodies come from our cold coastal waters?

Thanks,
-ST

the only benefit i can think of is that just about all the cool stuff gets off of LAX so we get first pick.

You can use the water itself as long as it is filtered, like the water from UCSB (see the sticky thread above). I suppose you could even use unfiltered if you could collect it off the coast with a boat or something.

No livestock -- they can't survive tropical temps for long -- but if you are a fan of NSW you can get it filtered from a few taps around for free.

On the copepods...yeah, you could probably use a plankton net ot collect food. You also run the risk of introducing something really nasty to your tank. Personally, I'd buy a bottle of Oceanpods at $25 and culture them for food before taking the risk.

I'd say the weather would be the only real benefit. Its a little cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter.
