What is the proper way or a good way to set up a Qtank?

My two DeathCo fish died. Could I have screwed up my first Qtank.

I took 10 gallons of water from my display tank and put it in the qtank. Turned on the heater, put on a whisper hob for a 20 gallon tank, put in some paraguard for the ick and put some food in the tank? should I have checked for ammonia or something like that?

Both fish died.

Were the fish new additions? Did they have ich?

Assuming they were new - put them in the QT to observe them and watch their eating. Don't treat for ich unless it develops. Do large water changes (50%) every other day w/ aged-aerated water.

The tang had ick. It was a brown Naso. The cardinal did not have any signs, but I figured it was in the same tank so it probably would show signs in a few days.

Also, I did not aerate the water. However, it was finely aged water.

i would've use ammo-lock for setting up a new tank....but since you took water straight out of your old tank you shouldn't of had a problem
