View Full Version : May Meeting - Sunday, May 22, Woodbury NJ

05/02/2005, 07:46 PM
This thread is for RSVP. A separate thread will be started for trading.

Place and Time:

@ Harry Young’s house a.k.a. HarryY
54 N. Warren St.
Woodbury, NJ 08096

Sunday, May 22, 1:00 PM til ?

¾ mile from Rt 295 exit 21 (South Jersey)

If you need detailed directions, please PM me with From Location.

Please RSVP so I can plan for food and refreshments.

I will supply standard food (some sort of sandwich(s)/side dish (potato salad)) and refreshments (Soda, Beer and Wine)

You are more than welcome to bring a special dish or something. If so, please post so everyone will know to prevent duplication.

Due to the fact I have been battling a serious algae problem for the past six months, I have not been able to collect as much coral as most. I would like to know if anyone is willing to donate a frag or two to raffle off at this month’s meeting? Proceeds will go to the NJRC. Please PM me if you’re interested.

This is my first attempt at hosting a meeting, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Harry

Harry,
The meeting is less than 2 weeks away and I only count 8 people to attend. Hope you're not susceptible to feeling self conscious :-)
Maybe we are just geographically in a bad area. Hopefully more will reply, that way if I can't make it I won't feel so bad :-)
Look at it this way, better odds to win a raffle.

Jim [jgln],

Kind of gives a new meaning to "build it and they will come". Self consciuos... me... I just hope I had on enough deoderant at the last meeting I attaneded:)

The house will be open no matter how many attend. All are welcome! At the very least, there will be food and refreshments for the hungry.

I have been a little pre-occupied with coaching Track for my daughters school, so I have not had a chance to reply as much as I would like. Anyway I will start a thread tonight for trade, buy, sell. I have some equipment that I would like to sell/trade and will post pictures tonight. I also can provide some macro algae to anyone interested (free).

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far.

Kabal, Maybe we can save you 1/2 the trip. We're taking ReefTreasures along with us and maybe we can pick you up at an exit on the parkway (exit 98 rest area)?

If you don't get any northerners coming down let me know and we can plan a time to meet.

GHA - You haven't seen GHA until you've see my tank. Check my gallery just to get a small dose:) I'm harvesting this weekend and hopefully you will get to see some of my rock if you come to the meeting:eek1:

Below was a while ago (2-3 months), I removed and scrubbed the rock. It is now about the same as below, maybe a little worse. Damn that HA!

Harry Y-

Do currently use RO water in your tank, might help knock out the GHA?

Sorry to get off topic.

Regards
Keith

HarryY
05/18/2005, 07:27 AM
Yes, 4 stage RO/DI 75GPH - TDS is currently reading 0. I use RO/DI for all top off and water changes. I change the pre-filter & carbon every 6 months or less and DI when I get a TDS reading > 2. Feeding: 1 - 3" sqaure of nori and 1/4 of shrimp or Formula A once a day, sometimes 1 sliver of cyclopeeze.

Bio-load consists of 2 Fals Percs, 1 Blue Neon Goby, 1 Yellow Tang and a cleaner shrimp. 1 Hemit Crab, 1-2 dozen various snails (mainly Astrea, Margarita and Nassarius, 1 fighting conch).

Thanks, Harry

Harry,
RO DI is a good tool to fight HA and in one of the projects of schools that I worked on once I flipped rocks upside down, less light, less feeding and added tons of corals. When algae die and become nutrition in the tank it has to go somewhere and you can collect it with Refug. Light on 24/7 and keep trimming, corals take the rest and feed once every two days. In a month and two all the algae was gone. I also for some reasons started to use Red Sea Salt and not sure if salt have something to do with it or no but I will keep it in my recipe all the time. One thing is really good to do before flipping the rock is to take it out and use brush to take as much as you can out and then dip it in clean water before you put it back in the tank.
:D good time at the meeting :d

Do I get discounted pricing on any of those future ORA milli frags, (since I didn't take them 'cause of new tankness).

Harry,
You and your family did a fantastic job hosting the meeting! You made us feel very welcome and went above and beyond with the food and refreshments. Way more than I expected. Like I mentioned, maybe you can visit and see our tank since we are so nearby. I'll extend an offer once I figure out a good time.
Keep us posted, especially if you choose to try the sugar!

Harry and Family,
Thank you very much for having Billy and I over. Your family made us feel right at home. Hopefully he didn't fill your pond up with too many shells. Since I've started out in this hobby I've always been imprssed with the quality of people who are involved with it - Saturday was just another fine example. Thanks again for making us feel so welcome.

Thank you for all the kind words and recommendations on the tank. I will begin my battle on the GHA in earnest this weekend.

1.) I am planning on starting a Kalk drip to get my Calcium up to about 400. Currently it's around 380 or so. PH is on the Low side as well. Alk is usually about 8-9 dKH.

2.) I am planning to remove sections of the rock and placeing the rock in a separate bin with a powerhead and filter (approx 1 week per section).

3.) I am goint to syphon the sand band and leave no more than one inch of sand in the tank.

Oh yeah, I will reduce feeding to every other day.

I am a little skiddish on the Sugar idea?

Thanks again,

I will see you at Kevins next month.

Phyl
05/24/2005, 09:08 AM
I'd leave the sand (you don't have all that much anyway), feed every other day, and scrub that rock like crazy with old saltwater, give it a rinse in some more old saltwater and then put it in the bin with the powerhead. Maybe you could do the sugar while the rock is in the separate bucket. That way it isn't in your main.

Good luck getting rid of it all, even if it is kinda pretty!!
