View Full Version : Thin layer of sponge in sump baffles?

I had a thin layer (.5") of very porous sponge (e.g., the sort of sponge you would get with an aquaclear HOB power filter) in the baffles in my 'fuge. I read that nitrates and phosphates could build up in sponges and that they shouldn't be in a reef tank. Does this hold even for this thin layer of sponge? The sponges have a bunch of 'pods running through them, so I was wondering if it was all that different from porous live rock, given that there is a lot of flow through these sponges and creatures are living in them. Thanks for your thoughts...

You might see some elevated nitrate from the layer of sponge, but if you're not measuring a problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with Jonathan. As long as your not having nitrate problems, don't worry about it. I would clean it often though, and keep an eye on the nitrates just in case. The same is true with canister filters and filter socks IMO.
