I am currently building a 30 gal 36" sump/fuge. I am going to have a Red Sea Triple pass skimmer with turbo venturi/rio 2500 set up. If I go straight with it it will take up approx 17" of chamber space. So I was thinking, if i used two 90 degree elbows and brought the pump right back next to the skimmer it would then allow much more fuge and return chamber space.

So.. will I lose sufficient pressure from the elbows? Or is a rio 2500 still strong enough to push the skimmer. I could only use one elbow and that would save a few inches. Thanks

IIRC the RS Berlin asks for a pump that puts out 500 gph at ten feet( it's in the instruction book.) The Rio 2500 is underpowered though it will fire OK. A general of thumb is that a 90 degree change in direction on the same size pipe the pump was rated at will result in about one foot of head loss. So if a pump was rated at 600gph at zero feet and 400GPH at two feet ,your two elbows would put it in the 400GPH range in this example . As your pipe will be horizontal there is really no additional head loss on such a short run.

Great Thanks. So if I only do one 90 Ill be in the range. Greatly appreciated Thanks Again!!

and the 2500 puts out 748 gph (I think) so would that bring me down the only 548?

Remember, I think it called for one that did 500 GPH at ten feet. I don't think the RIO 2500 even pumps at ten feet.

As to what the losses are with the RIO you will need to look at the flow charts that come with it.

If possible I would use two 45's instead of one 90 (or four 45's instead of two 90's). They will cause less flow loss IMO and accomplish the same goal.

That may work. Thanks

f.y.i so I built the sump/fuge and set up the skimmer w/two 90 degree elbows and a kent turbo venturi w/rio 2500 and it works amazing. Had to throttle it back a bit even. pressure loss was not a problem at all. and with the 90's saved around 6" of space
