I have had a saltwater tank now for sometime, I have a 180 FO tank with about 3 inches of crushed coral on the bottom, I have a VOLITAN LION, PANTHER GROUPER, AND A REGAL TANG, I am really intrested in adding another fish and I was thinking of a shark, could someone please give me some suggestions on this please, also I would like a shark that is kind of active and just does not sit on the bottom of the tank all day, plus I am curious how hard it is to keep one up, anyway any responses will be helpful thanks.

Your going to need heavy skimming, and any shark thats active wont fit in your tank most sharks that would fit in that is the bamboo shark and they tend to stick to the bottom of the tank.

there are no sharks that are acitve like you are saying that fit into a 180

there are small sharks that you could get like
cat sharks
but these act more like a catfish just laying on the bottom

the reason that dont swim around alot is because they have a different way of breathing then most sharks like jaws
tehy dont need to swim to get water movement through there gills

I dunno... we have a pair of coral cat sharks in a 125 and while they swim at night (the length of the tank gives them some room) they sleep on the bottom of the tank stationary during the day. We are messing with the idea of bumping them to a longer tank right now, but ... sigh... space, space, space...

They are VERY light sensitive though and really don't like any light on in the room.

A 180 really isnt very big enough for any shark species. If you want to house them right, i'd say at least a 220 but thats minimal. I really dont recommend sharks to anyone because they're a lot of work and very picky about water conditions.

at the risk of someone jumping on me I would argue - Depends on the species of shark. Plus, I forgot to mention... there is a 55 gal sump on the 125, and the book sharks and rays indicates that a 125 is within acceptable range for coral cat sharks.

that said... we have been doing saltwater tanks, reef tanks, etc for over 15 years and have kept a variety of picky and difficult animals. We did research on sharks for two years before we bought our first pair. So in that sense, I agree that recommending sharks to the average hobbiest is fraught with peril at best.

I only mentioned my comments to counter the comment above that NO small sharks swim like big ocean sharks. That's all.

Catsharks can get over 36" long and will out grow your tank. The question is not if you can keep them, it weather you can keep them in an exceptable housing that does not effect thier well being. I work for a public aquarium and you would be suprised by the number of calls we get from people looking for a home for the shark that out grew thier tank.

Yo, KingDiamond. This is totally off topic, but King Diamond is playing here in Dallas on May 17 with Behemoth, Nile and Black Dhalia Murder. I will sooooooo be there!

I am goin on the 28th in Detroit. Give me a heads up as far as the set list. I hop he mixes it up better than last time. Do you have Deadly Lullabyes? On the inside back cover you can see me (well my hand anyway) at the top of the banner. My buddy Eric is the bald dude on the right next to the arm of the guy holding up the banner. I wish the opening bands were a little better! Entombed opened last time. I have a requirment for Death Metal, You have to be able to understand what the heck the singer is saying and from what I have heard of Behemoth, Nile and Black Dhalia Murder they don't fit the bill!

I actually like Nile a lot, so I'm pumped. But I must admit that Black Dhalia and Behemoth are too similar to Nile and all three of those acts might get a little bit monotonous.

If you have only been in the hobby for 6 months like your signature says it would be best to wait on a shark - they are some of the more needy and challenging fish out there. Even if you have more experience I would discourage all but the most advanced fish keepers from most shark species - just my 2 cents.
