Tricks to removing sand bed?

I tried siphoning out my sand bed but it took so much water out too quickly my tank would have emptied if I kept siphoning and I couldn't just put the water back in because it was so nasty after it mixed with the sand after being vaccumed. Then I tried scooping with a cup and the tank became so dirty and cloudy and it took me for after to scoop anything up. Anyone have any suggestions on how to suck the sand up with leaving the water in the tank or something?

By the way my sand bed is crushed coral.

Siphon your crushed coral through a filter bag or panty hose, running the water back into your sump. Have a friend switch out the filter material when they are full so that you do not have to start and stop siphoning each time.
