Can you get Live black sand? If not how would you make it live?

live rock will seed your sandbed and make it "live". getting a handful of sand from an established reef tank and dispersing it in your sandbed will also make it "live".

I jumped on the bandwagon with black sand last year. I had it for a few months and dithed it. It is very hard to keep "clean". Live rock rubble and other things really show up on it. It looks great at first, but after a few months it isnt so hot.

I went to black, but agree with bradsreef. It was always full of white stuff. So I added some of that indo pacific black (black & white mix). It looks much better and camoflauges all the crap that falls to the bottom. There are a few pics in my gallery you can see. The one titled 'new canopy" shows it with black only and you can see how much stuff gets on it. The more recent pics show it with the white.

A black sand bed (although I have never had one) is supposidly a nightmare to keep clean. Actually it doesn't get any dirtier than a light colored sand bed but the black makes every piece of deteris and any other junk stick out like a sore thumb. If it is not meticulously cleaned on a regular basis it will look like crap!
