Anyone have any idea what these are? They seem to be popping up more and more.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/bigfalcon36/P1010005.jpg

Also, if I am making my own lime water/kalkwasser....anyone know what the mixing ratio is. I have tried to look it up online but seem not to be getting any where. Finally, if I dose my water with kalkwasser will my skimmer remove all the stuff (kalkwasser, trace elements)that I am putting in?

Thanks!

Travis

mojano anemones, Aptasia! Get rid of them!!!

I boil vinegar and squirt it into them with a needle type syringe.

Don't cut them off in the tank because each piece that escapes could be another some place else in your tank.

mojano anemones

they will spread and take over your tank

bad news...get some joes juice and nuke them. they are pests. if you let them spread because they look cool, you will never be able to kill them all. they will reproduce weekly almost until your tank has no usable space left.

Like redpyro said, they will eventually take over your tank...

You really cant add too much kalk to water. Once the water reaches a point of saturation the excess will settle to the bottom. So if you have powder laying on the bottom of the container you have added more than is nessecary. For me this is around 1-1/2 teaspoons per gallon of RO/DI. I started with 1 tsp and increased slowly to avoid any excess waste.

There are some who cant reach there cal/alk usage at this saturation, and I belive they add white vinegar to the kalkwasser to increase the saturation level but this shouldnt necessary unless you have a large sps dominate tank with little evaporation.

Remember to keep an eye on PH when dripping it in until you get the hang of it. I like to drip mine after lights out because even though my fuge is on a reverse photoperiod my PH drops a few tenths at night and the kalk helps keep it up with its PH of around 12 at saturation.

Slick-

I was reading on a DIY site some where online that you could add lime to water to make Kalkwasser, and the thing is we have bulk lime bins at work for our water treatment. So I was thinking that I could just mix up a batch and see if it worked....but I just dont want that IF to go the other directions and wipe a lot of stuff out you know.

Let me know what you guys think.

Micki doses with Limewater...

I used to does with Kalk and loved the results but I am lazy and hated the upkeep on mixing kalk water, letting it sit, syphoning off the top usable water, keeping my DIY dripper from clogging over time from the high calcium buildup you get. I will admit it did do a nice job. But i have found my daily dose of 2 part calcium does pretty much the same job much easier. And when you buy it in gallons its only $30 for a gallon of each. (I figure a large tube of kalk was about $12 for the same about of time usage) I'll pay $18 extra a year for the convience.

i am not sure on the ratio, just looking for calcium hydroxide locally. i cant seem to find any stores that sell pickling lime and thought you may have found such a place.

This is what i was hoping to find around here. I already have some of the fish store supplements. Anything to save a few dollars for livestock though.

Have you looked at the large chain type grocery stores?
I found it at a giant eagle and I belive the CORA guys get it at a Kroger.

Salty critter carries 1lb containers of ESV brand for 7.50 if you can't find the food grade stuff.

I use a calcium reactor and have never dosed calk in any other way... So far, I've not needed to, but have wondered if I should now and then anyway.

As for the mojano... Injecting them with vinegar worked very well for me.

Micki-

what's your ratio for making Lime water?

Micki
03/19/2005, 01:04 AM
Bigfalcon 36 Here is a calculator. If your CA is really low I would dose with Kents or something like that to get ot the level you want then use the lime water to keep it there. You cn see in the calculator how much to use of the different products.

http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chem_calc3.html

I haven't started dosing with pickling lime in the 125 yet. But in my 55 I think I started out with 1/2 tsp then tested. If it wasn't hight enough I then went to 3/4. I think I finally ended up adding 1 tsp or maybe a little less. when you are ready to go with the lime water let me know and I can help walk you through it.

Here is an online site. I think it is bulk quantities.

Needles (http://ryvmed.com/syringesneedles.aspx)

I would probably go in with you if you end up ordering a box.

I mix a little kalk powder with salt water into a paste, and use those small measuring syringes (no needle) that come in the test kits to put a small dab of the paste right in the middle of the aptasia. they eat it and plump up and then die.

I got mine at Jacks a long time ago. They aren't expensive. It's not really a "true" needle. At least I don't want to be the one getting it, it would be bigger than an 18G! OUCH!
