Are you running a skimmer? The aquarium should not be giving off a smell...waste in the water may be creating the odor. What type of lighting are you using. Aquariums can heat up with glass tops and intense lighting. It is better for the aquarium to be open. Gets rid of heat better and better oxygen exchange.

A sweet smell? not sure about that one but are you running any kind of carbon in the tank? usually the carbon will help with odor and yellowness of the tank.

I am running a carbon filter. I do not have skimmer right now, but I plan on getting the Aqua C Remora. I am running 130 Watts of CF lighting with a glass top.

I think I was overfeeding my fish. I was feeding them 3 times a day, like the flake bottle said. I just did a water change and am going to reduce the amount of food. I think I also need to change the carbon filter.

Am I on the right track?

My tank smelled unusually bad today. I ran some carbon , within 2 hours I couldn't smell it.

It's the glass top.
It's trapping air and letting the smell build up to a level where you can smell it.
I run an open top so the any odors don't have time to build up.

Do you have a problem with evaporation?

No problems with evaporation at all.
Most of us here run open tops.
Lets ALL the light get to the corals and helps cool the tank as well as helping oxygen exchange.
I don't really see much of reason to run a top unless it's hilding up your light fixture or you have jumpers in your tank.

Just be glad its a sweet smell. I always smell live rock when I buy it before I put it in my tank. Melon smell = good, rotten fish smell = bad. Lose the lids just go topless :)

That is the 1st time I have heard that one.
LOL
NO they are not jumpers.
Their body structure isn't designed for that activity.
But gobies on the other hand, they don;t call them DART fish for nothing.
