Is the pre-mixed salt water that is sold in my LFS any good for reef systems?? It comes in like a silver bag, and says ocean water. I don't have R0 unit at this point, and i know tap water is no good, so i was thinkin about this. Does anybody use it??

2nd many people use lfs water but another good solution is to find ro water at you local walmart or grocery store. Then you will need to mix your own salt but it may be cheaper that way GOOD LUCK! :)

Hi Texas,

Is it real ocean water or just premixed artificial? How much does it cost per gallon?

WaterKeeper:Don't know if it was ocean water, or pre-mixed. I'll go back today and look closer. Is one better than the other??

Cpt. Murphy: I just buy the RO water like in a jug, at a grocery store?? Guess i never noticed they had it before......cost isn't a really big deal, cuz it's for a 5.5 nano, so i don't need that much.l

Yes the kind in the 1 gallon jugs but make sure it says ro on it. Also some grocery stores have machines outside that sell it. :)

As far as I've heard either distilled or store bought RO is probably OK. There was, in the past, some concern over distilled coming from stills with copper condenser coils but EPA copper limits have pretty much made that matter moot. If the RO comes from a machine make sure it is serviced regularly. If bottled it should give you some info on how it was prepared. Most is UV or ozone treated to kill bacteria so chlorine removal is not a problem. It still would be wise to get a cheap TDS meter to check each batch. If the TDS is under 10 ppm it probably is fine to use it.
