View Full Version : Overflow box - worth it?

I'm thinking about getting a bigger tank (30-40g is all I have space for now). I could use my current 20g as a sump. I could get an overflow box to send water down to the sump and skim down there. Currently I'm just using an Eheim canister filter. But I've heard about problems of the siphon breaking and flooding? If there is a danger of this, I wouldn't feel happy about employing this method but I'm keen to expand my experience.

Does anyone have experience with these overflow boxes and has anyone had issues (or disasters) and what the ways on cutting down the likelihood of spillages?

i use over flow boxes right now... ive never had over flow problem and if the suction breaks its beacause i do it to clean the tubes once a month..ive also got a valve on the hose leading into the sump..you also need to look at your pump..what is the flow rate of it then find out how much hose you need for the plumbing into the sump ...hope this helps

I just bought a 50g (18x18x36). With a 20g sump, can someone recommend both an in-sump and external pump?

Looking at these:

The CPR CS90 Overflow Box has 600gph which give me 12x volume turnover. I'm not going to be doing any SPS yet - just fish, rock, inverts and softies (maybe a few zoanthids).

DO NOT use cpr overflow. There a diaster stories that all involve them. If going overflow box, get a u-tube overflow. Much better option.

dido. DON"T USE CPR OVERFLOWS. Get a lifereef overflow. Excellent device. CPR needs an uplift pump. You don't want a siphon overflow that needs an uplift pump to keep the siphon going...

Recommend Iwaki pumps with the Japanese motors.

Not sure understand the difference between this one and a CPR as they look the same?

ya those look good. The difference is these have a u-tube which don't easily break suction, because air doesn't get trapped at the top.

DO NOT get a CPR box. Get a good U Tube overflow. Lifereef and Amiracle are both very good.

isnt it easier 2 get ur tank drilled? then spend the money on an overflow??

thats if the tank isnt setup already

cost me $5 at the glassier 2 put a 25mm hole in my tank.... so much more cost effective then an overflow box
