View Full Version : Lumenarc 3 Group Buy
Fursphere

Any interest? I'm buying a bunch (10+) in the near future, and since the cost goes down with the more you buy, I was wondering if anyone else wanted to get on board.
I'm not doing this for profit, just to help fellow reefers out.
Post here, or PM me.

The best single ended (mogul) MH reflector on the market.

wow, that's an expensive one. I'm looking for a new set and in processing of planning an arylic canopy. I might be interested but i'm in need of a retrofit soon.

Hey Andy, I would be in for at least 4. Let me know when the buy gets going and I'll give you a final tally, but it will be at least 4.

Great!
I'm hoping to do this in about two weeks. Tomorrow (monday) I'll call the supplier and see if I can get an updated price break beyond what I already have. :D
RasBobre
03/06/2005, 12:28 PM
I may be interested. Does this price include the socket and hanging bracket?
Fursphere
03/06/2005, 03:25 PM
With the sockets and cords its about $125 ish with tax and everything.
I'll get back to you after tomorrow, and I get the updated pricing schedule.
Fursphere
03/09/2005, 01:23 PM
Ok, I'll (hopefully) have the updated pricing today.
Looks like about 20+ hoods total order. :D
I'm thinking March 20th is a good date to cut off new joins to the group buy, then actually going down and buying them April 1st, or there abouts.
If anyone has a problem with this, needs more time, etc, PM and we'll work it out. I'm flexable.
Once I get the updated prices sent out, I'll setup a list of everyone involved, and what exactly they are ordering, since some want hoods & sockets, and some just want hoods.
So far no interest in the smaller LA3 (lumenarc minis).

Just out of curiousity - what do these hoods normally go for?
Thanks
Minh
Fursphere
03/09/2005, 01:57 PM
Normally...
Hoods - $109.99
Sockets - $25
Cords - $5
+tax of course
(guess I should have posted that to begin with. :) )
Right now I'm getting them for $123 a peice (hood+socket+cord+tax). That was at 10 hoods. It should go down even more.
Fursphere
03/09/2005, 05:13 PM
Just got the updated price.
If we can hit 20 hoods (or more. :p ), the price per hood drops to $69.99 (originally $109.99!). They won't go any lower. I'll be sending out PMs to everyone who has PM'd already, to update / confirm orders. (I think we might already be at 20 hoods, I'll have to add up everyone. :D )
The sockets and cords don't get any cheaper ($20 for the socket, $5 for the cord).
If you want to get in on this, the cut off is March 20th. After that I won't be adding anyone else to the buy.
Let me know ASAP! fursphere@yahoo.com (or PM).

I was told that the newer LA3 (minis!) could be worked into this deal, I didn't get pricing on them though, since there has been no interest in them thus far. Everyone wants the big ones. :D
The minis are 14"x14" (not sure how tall). I can inquire about pricing on the little ones if somebody is interested.
I don't know much about light but can i use a DE MH bulb with this? I want to use a 250 14k phoenix MH.
Fursphere
03/09/2005, 06:24 PM
No. These are for SE bulbs only.
Dustin @ PSG will custom modify a hood for you for a DE bulb, but I'm not getting involved with that. Please contact him directly for information on that process.

I figure they come in boxes (maybe not?), so thats lots of space in the bed of my pickup.
I'd rather not stack them, due to scratching that can occur. That, and 40 is about $4500 worth of equipment (reflectors + sockets + cords). I don't want to be responsible for anything above that. :D

03/09/2005, 07:22 PM
Ok, the mini's are a bit different.
They come with the ballast box (the box that holds the ballast) built onto the reflector in a "compact" design. They look like this -
http://www.gchydro.com/prd/lig/la3compact_lg.jpg
He said he'd sell 3 for $100 a peice (no sockets or cords, just the reflector assembly). Normally they are like $130 or something.
But that price is only good through THIS group buy, because we are buying so many of the normals.
Let me know.
andy,
thanks for setting up this group buy but i think i'm gonna pass on the mini's for now. i know its all supply and demand but a $30 a piece difference for a smaller reflector is hard for me to justify.
but thanks for all your effort.

The L3's come unassembled; you'll get a bag of bolts to finish the assemble yourself.. i.e. only the actual reflector is assembled (rivoted together), the sockets/base/etc aren't.. the reflectors have a protective film on the inside of the "mirrored" pieces and not the polished pieces.. they are stored by stacking one on top of each other; like paper cups.. when i picked mine up, dustin and the other guys gave me a quick demo on how the L3's are made..
IMO.. the smaller version is not worth the cost savings.. i.e. you should only get the smaller version IF the normal size is TOO BIG for your application..

Do you have to use thier socket, or can you use any socket you want with the hoods?
Thanks for your information so far too. :D

I have two up now. I am using my old sockets w/ the reflectors. They fit but were a little snug (had to bend mounting metal slightly).
Rob
user48953
03/09/2005, 10:36 PM
i went with their socket.. the reflector is pretty light, most of the weight comes from the bracket and socket.. i like their socket b/c you don't have to worry about aligning the bulb.. there's 2 guide rails in the bracket; this allows you to have the bulb closer to the water.. as for the cord, i used my own b/c i hard-wired it to my IC ballasts.

As for how many I dont know...im thinking maybe 2 400's 14" over a 72x36x25 tall tank. Think that would cover the full 72x36 and still be able to keep clams in the sand?

i've also added some pics of my new 160g to my gallery.. the tank is 62"L x 24"H x 24.5"W with 2 openings that are 19"W.. this pic gives you an idea how far/close you can position them..

THE GROUP BUY IS CLOSED TO NEW JOINS!

I'm sorry to everyone who picked up on this thread late, but there are a number of you out there, so its possible that you could start a second group buy...? I can only handle so many myself, and since I'm basically doing all of this work for free, I'm not willing to do any more than I have already agreed too.
The question came up in a recent PM that I had not placed the order with PSG yet (I guess the person called PSG to check if I had instead of just asking me directly. ). I have not placed the order yet because I haven't received all the payments, simple as that. I don't want to order things I don't have payments for. ;)

Minh - I talked to Mike Paletta before last months talk about the dispersion of light from these hoods. I too am using these hoods for a 180, but I decided to go with three. I'll be using 400W 14K bulbs. Mike thought that would kick***.

Thanks Robert. I am having someone pick up two hoods, moguls, and cords for me. I am going to PM him to see if he can pick up three for me. I am concerned with three 400 watt bulbs will cause my electricity bill to really spike. That's the reason why I thought two 175w bulbs (for the outer two bulbs) and one 250W bulb would work better for me.
I am going to start another thread about a 180G inwall tank. Maybe it's just a dream, but I thought I'd get started thinking about it (and saving up some money for it).

To everyone else who has already gotten me the payments, and continued to stay in contact with me, THANK YOU! It makes things so much easier when everyone works together. :D
Just to make sure we're all on the same page....
IF I DO NOT GET YOUR PAYMENT BY THURSDAY YOU ARE BEING REMOVED FROM THE GROUP BUY. (March 31st, 2005)

Andy,
Sweet setup! Did you do all the construction work by yourself? I went to lunch with my GF today and was talking about an inwall tank. At least her response wasn't an immediate "NO!" :D

Thanks!
Yes, I've done everything myself so far. :)
I'm working on www.fursphere.com now. Its semi-operational. Still needs a lot of work though. Feel free to check it out.

What ballast is everyone going to use on these? I was thinking of running a BlueWaveII Pulse start or Two Icecap 250W.
BTW, i was thinking of driving there with you Andy and picking two up, if that is ok with you.
Maybe we should all meet somewhere to see how we can all carpool together.

Andy-
I wouldn't be able to go Saturday. My wife is on military duty for the next 2 weeks and she would kill me if I took 1 of her 2 days off to do fish stuff.
Would you have room in the car to add 4 sockets and cords?

I went thru the thread, and can't seem to locate the final price. Anyone recall what it was going to be?
I might try to budget for one as part of the secondary buy deal.
Thanks,

I think it is 69 dollars for Reflector, Mogul, and Cable.

Wrong.

Here it is, 69 was only for the hood.
So it looks like it is $95. Is that correct Andy?

Sorry, was not my intention to inflame anyones anger.
Sorry if I didn't make it clear that wasn't asking you to get me one. I thought I said that I was thinking about getting with the others that would do it seperately.

Got myself a new fighter jet. ;)
Everything went down as planned. I've got a living room full of reflectors now. :eek2:
Thanks again to Dan @ PGS. Awesome guy to work with. :D
There was a good turnout of "stragler" buyers. They all went home happy.

Andy-
Great news!
I could run by Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. What time works for you?
Also, thank you very much for doing this and picking them all up. With gas prices, I bet you spent pretty penny picking everyone's reflector up. All I want to know is do you want a softie, zoo, LPS or SPS as a thank you?

Zoos would be cool.
Give me a call tomorrow (PM if you need number), I should be home (or really close by) all day.
Everyone local is more than welcome to come by and pickup there stuff. I've got it all sorted out and ready to go. :)

Cool, I'll give you a call. My schedule depends on the weather. We are going to take the kids to the The Bug Zone at the zoo in the morning, unless it rains.
I have some nice Raspberry colored ones I'll bring you a nice frag of. I'll either call in the morning, or as we are leaving the zoo.

3. Tank has three 22" square openings, and one hood will go over each.
I plan on getting everything packed up and (hopefully) shipped out this weekend. I'll just send you guys out a bill to cover my expenese. :)
