View Full Version : Using arm and hammer baking soda need help

Do i real need to bake it in the oven for an hour or can i use it right out of the box? This will help my alkalinity right (at 7.2 dkh).plus i'm dosing bionic 2 part system but it's get my ph up but not my alk.

You don't need to bake it. People bake it to increase ph. But if all you want to do is increase alk, then you don't need to bake it.

I just read up a little. Heating sodium bicarbonate will cause it to convert to sodium carbonate and release water and carbon dioxide.

Without the carbon dioxide, your ph will rise when you use baked sodium bicarbonate (i.e. sodium carbonate)

I think it is also possible for non-baked sodium bicarbonate to lower your ph slightly because of the carbon dioxide produced when you add the sodium bicarbonate to water, but that shouldn't be too much to worry about.
