I have a 29G tank and I built a hood for and the hood is 16" tall. The 250w MH will be aprox. 14" off the water is this too high?

Mine are about 6" but with a tank that small you might have some heat problems with them too close, especially in the summer.

I have a hamilton 4 ft. fixture it sit on top of the tank it is no more than 5 inches above the water, it has plexiglas between to protech bulbs from water splash.

Wow, I'm about 8" from the top of the tank and about 10" from the top of the water ... guess I need to lower it some ... makes it more difficult to get large pieces of Rock in/out of the tank though :(

alot has to do with depth of tank and size i have a 90gl. and it is 24 inches deep so i need to get light deeper for some corals. that is why i have mine so close to water.

My tank is 18" deep, I guess I'll be cutting the hood down till the Mh is 8" above water? Or less?
