My guess is the size of the dog's shadow against the door/wall. According to the size of the shadow, the beagles paw is as big as the guy's face.

Not really, if the dog is closer to the light source his shadow should be bigger.

Yea, but unless there is a spotlight on the dog it is too big. The ratio from dog to human and human to shadow and shadow to dog seems a little off. But I could just be going nuts cuz I'm tired.

It's the bigger ears. that's why they can...
But this picture is definitley not a basset.. Look at the jowels...yowels, jawells.
I had a friend who was rather obtuse - his favorite phrase was "jawell"
