Hey everyone

what local LFS do you know of in New Jersey. Most of us go to places near us, mines is Tropiquarium in Ocean. Yeah, I know they have high prices, but that's what's near me. I used to go to Absolutely Fish, in Totowa, there prices aren't that great either, can be a bit expensive too. But they have great corals. There is (was) a place in Elmwood Park also, can't remember the name.

Anyway, what LFS do you go to, and where is it? Maybe we can compile a list, and meet or shop at other places. I definitely need another place to get stuff from. So, where do you go?

ditto to chrisd4421... the one chrisd4421 called "MyReef" i think is actually called reefs inc. (i should know because i go there all the time) it's ONLY a saltwater fish store...pretty cool..pretty expensive, but you can't beat their quality

Since this seems to be a more complete list of LFS in NJ than many of the other threads, can we make this a "Sticky thread"?

Not sure who or how or if anyone agrees.....just my .02 cents..

thanks

Wow

din't know all these places were around, I have to try and visit as many as I can. Has anyone every been to RT 4 Aquarium? I used to go there all the time. They were decent all around, and usually have nice corals. There was a place in Fort Lee, just before the bridge that had loads of stuff, don't know if it's there anymore, will have to check.

As for making this a sticky, I agree and like wise, how does one do that?

Keep the information coming, this will be a great list once it's formed. No more just running around trying to find a place. We will know where to go and what's at the stores. I'll try and post the ones I visit.

I can do that ;) .

However these types of threads often become promotion/bashing threads. Keep it factual with minimal value judgements and it can be very helpfull. If it degenerates please contact a mod .

TIA for your cooperation,

I practically live at Ocean Gallery II and sometimes go to Pet Shanty on Rt 22 west. Although I think the Shanty has better freshwater tanks. I also go to TropAquarium even though it is a hike, they have really nice stuff.

Hey everyone,

stopped by Rt. 4 Aquarium today, during all my running around for my wife. That store is no where near, selection wise, what it used to be. I asked the guy Mike about T5 lights and he didn't know what I was talking about. This guy, I thought, was up on everything. I saw some corals, not bad in price, but some were not good at all. Time has a way of changing things, I guess, even your once LFS.

Anyway,

just sharing

All,
Went to Underwater World in Roselle earlier this week. Small store (only a total af about 20 tanks in his SW section) but good selection of stuff. Sort of expensive but the quality was great. His reef tanks are very clean, good selection, and the owner was very helpful.

Wanted to let eveyone know....

Reefs Inc. is west of Ocean Gallery on the Westbound side. It is in a small group of stores . A good Landmark to use is look for the boat dealership on the eastbound side Reefs Inc is across the street

I have not been to all of these stors, but I have been to many.. the best ? In my opinion:

- Absolutely fish (more coral and marine fish that anywhere else I have ever seen).. not cheap, but if you want it, they'll probabl;y have it..hundreds of carals.. maybe even a thousand at a time in stock. - Clifton new Jersey

- Underwater World: Small store.. but the best specimens you will ever find. Good selection and an owner who knows what he's talking about. His prices are not cheap, but his product is always excellent. - Roselle new Jersey

Finally.... just a hop over the border from New Jersey (closer to much of New Jersey than much of the state). is...

- Animal Kingdom (staten Island, New York).. reasonable selection of corals. some nice specimens (stocks up on coral on Tuesdays), reasonable prices.

Really small store....great quality....always has a great selection....the owner is ALWAYS there and is more knowledgable than most I have ran across.

It is on a main 4 lane road but if you aren't careful, you will drive by it numerous times before you see it.....
_

In my opinion, not worth the trip if you are driving 1+ hours each way but if you are in the area, you will be happy you stopped by!!

I live in the Morris Plains/Parsippany area, and my favorite LFS is 'Hanover Pets' on Route 10 in East Hanover. Their business card says 'Aquatic Visions, Inc.', but the lettering above the store is 'Hanover Pets", BTW.
Their dry goods (fliters, lights, etc.) are a bit pricey, but if you go there often and talk to the guys/girls that run the place, they give you some great deals on corals, frags, LS, crushed coral, etc. I honestly am not big into fish, so I can't tell you how the prices are, but they seem to have a great selection, and their corals are beautiful!
They also build custom tanks. I just bought my custom 7.5gal 12" cube for $25!! **If this interests you, please note: I have been going to the store for months now, and purchase there often, so don't expect to walk in there the first time and to be quoted $25 for the same tank.

Don't bother with Hanover Pet in East Hanover. These guys subscribe to the theory that nobody spends time on their tanks during the summer. They haven't brought fish in their for almost a month. Coral selection is near nothing, and what is there, is under some of the worst lighting I've seen, so you don't know the true color. They will / should get better after Labor day. I'm gonna look in other places until then.

There's a small pet store, Pets Pets Pets, on JFK Blvd off of Easton Ave in New Brunswick. Their salt water selection is real small (I think only about 10 small tanks), but the staff there are really helpful, and if you stop by often enough, they'll give you discounts on all your purchases (without the discounts it can get pretty pricey). They only have 2 reef tanks, and one of them recently had an aiptasia overgrowth, but I can't say as to the quality of the corals as I am new to this hobby and wouldn't know what to look for.

Garden Oaks Garden Center, sounds more like a place for your pond stuff, and cement crap, and it is. But, there is a 'barn' in the back that says Aquariums over it. Good fish selections, healty, nice looking corals. Dosen't seen 2 b alot of ppl in there, but the staff is helpful and friendly. From what I understand they are able to negotiate on price, so it's a good find. and quite a gem.
