Hi to all! We are new to sw and have a fish only system. Just wanted to thank you all for the information found here. My 14 year old son saved for over a year to be able to purchase this saltwater tank. Actually we went half for him for his Christmas present. We are really enjoying this new hobby and look forward to communicating with you all.:D Brenda

Welcome to our little tide pool on the world wide web!

I think it is great to hear of a young person taking on this responsibility. (I can get my 14 year old son to take care of my tanks while I travel...for a fee, of course. He doesn't want to take on one of his own full time, though.)

Okay, after rereading I have to be nosy and ask about the screen name...does your son have 11 siblings? I'm surprised there's either room or time for an aquarium!!!

 Yes! We have 6 boys and 6 girls. All ours! They all have taken great interest in the tank. Their favorite lately are the hermit crabs. The other night, 3 of them were looking for new shells. They all were gathered around watching them switch shells. It was a sight! We may need to get a bigger tank so everyone fits around better!

I also homeschool. When the 14 yr.old wanted a sw tank, he had to do a complete report on it. He had know how much work was involved and how much it costs. We are really excited about finding something that interests him.

[welcome]

There are a couple of meetings coming up, if possible bring your son to them.

Steve's tanks (this months meeting) is simply awe inspiring.

Anthony Calfo would be excellent to hear and learn more about tank setup.

Have fun and please participate.

wow! I'm worn out by only two teenagers. I guess I won't complain any more.

More power to him and all of you!

Thank you to all! We will try to make it to some meetings. Dustin (14 yr. old) also wants to do a nano cube. We may be asking a lot of questions and I hope we don't bother you all to much.

artful-dodger : Now you know why we have patience for a salt water tank!!!

Hello and welcome! Just beware of all the crazies on the board here (myself included ;) ) but weve actually got a decent bunch of reefkeeping misfits on here who can tackle most any question!
good luck

Welcome to the club!
I was also about 14 when I started. I remember (as it was about 20 years ago) that I had 4 tanks in my room. My parents thought I was crazy untill I started making some money from the fish I raised by selling to the LFS. It is a great hobby for teenagers as it teaches quite a bit about biololgy and chemistry and all. I guess that may be the reason I am now a microbiologist geek. Guess I just had to learn how it all worked. By the way, I also live in Golden.
Cheers

... or is that resent.
Hmmm, oh well.

Welcome to the boards, it is a great group of guys and gals with a ton of good information, except for that one guy.

The thought of one scares the hell outta me but twelve, I feel kinda light headed;)
Keep up the good work.
