I am moving the sump/refug to the basement and will now have a 16' head for the pump to deal with. I am looking for a recommendation on what pump would work best. I have a 58gal tank and 150gal sump (sounds backwards but true). I was thinking about the Mag 36. Will the head pressure hurt the pump? Will it shorten it’s normal life expectancy?

its the 4000HH. From what I have heard they are pretty good pumps.

I have a Mag-Drive 36 on a system that I am setting up, but the head is only 6 feet. According to http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_powerheads_pumps_danner_mag_drive_supreme.asp?CartId= your flow will be only 600 gph.

You might need an external pump like a Dolphin - NOTE THAT THEIR PERFORMANGE IS IN GPM SO YOU NEED TO MULTIPLY THE OUTPUT TIME 60 TO GET GPH. http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_pumps_dolphin_amp_master_aqua_sea_ampmaster_information.asp?CartId=

Thank you for the feedback. I am leaning towards the Iwaki MD70RLT. More than enough for now and room to grow. I may reconsider the Mag36, if I decide to go with the submerged option.

Going by the chart on the box from my mag 9.5, the mag 36 sould give about 800 GPH at 15 ft head.

Are the Mag pumps quiet? Do they put out excessive heat?

Quiet...yes.

Heat...I tested one over night submerged overnight in a 140 gal tank to mix saltwater. The water hit 90 degrees. I am setting mine up as an external pump.

In the Marine Depot catalog there is a note that “Mag Drive pumps are not recommended for saltwater aquarium external use. BEWARE! What would cause this?

News to me. Time to put on the thinking cap.

I think the Mag 36 would fit my application perfectly if it weren’t for the heat issue you mentioned. If it is not recommended for external saltwater use then I think I will look at the Iwaki and Pan World external pumps.

I agree...I have 18 ft of head...basement to 75 gall RR with mega-overflow....It is PERFECT!!....you would have to throttle it back just a bit. Mine is running straight out.... JMO :D

BTW...keep and eye peeled and you can pick-up a good used one for about $150 give or take, between e-bay or RC. Oh yea...I hear the Mak4 are similar (and much cheaper) but I have no first hand knowledge.

Enjoy:cool:

I think there have been problems with leaks.

You have a setup similar to what I will be setting up. I will be buying a 90 gal instead of my current 75gal. I will also have a sump in the basement. You use the Iwaki 55? You also have to throttle it back?

I plan on having to drilled 1" bulkheads. I guess I should get bigger then the Iwaki 55 maybe the 70?

I purchased the Pan World PS150 and it works great. I have enough flow to the reef tank and I am bleeding off into a Refug and back into the sump.
