I noticed on a piece of LR I got, there is quite a bit of this white stringy stuff on it...does anyone know what this is and if it's something good or bad?

basically it is a spaghetti worm. very beneficial for a reef.

oh and one more thing...we have a bunch of anemones in our tank but we were told that certain kinds aren't good because they sting soft corals and they take over the tank like the plague///is there any way i can tell if these anemones that we got with the LR are good or bad? if they are bad should we attempt to remove them?

here are a couple pics of 2 of them, i think we have about 6 or 7 that i've spotted...

Those are the BAD ones! Get Joes Juice RIGHT NOW!!!

Mike O'Brien

yeah those look like aptasia's you can get rid of them with Joe's juice, but they dont always become a problem, I usually have a few in the tank at any given time, but never more than that.

oh that stinks, lol, here is one more, don't know if this is also a bad one...if it isn't a bad anemone will this joe's juice stuff kill it as well?

Cool setup! Have you thought about a background color?

Kawaii
01/30/2005, 09:03 PM
yeah we're thinking of just a dark blue but we aren't going to do anything for a while...we might just let it all grow and see if it just fills out to where a background isnt really necessary...i do agree that at this point it does look quite odd since its so bare and you can see right through to the walll.

Now would be the time to invest in a peppermit shrimp. They will eat small aptasia. If you have two on your rock, you might have more that you cannot see yet. The shrimp is reef safe and omnivorous. Too bad it won't eat the Damnsel. :)

i thought peppermint shirmp eat soft corals though?

Kawaii

oh and the damsel is just something to look at lol...we're thinking of getting 3 or 4 very small fish..maybe a blue hippo tang, a maroon clown, and some type of angel

The 'Tang Police' will be knocking on your door if they read this. The Tangs get too big for a tank that size. I have never heard of a Peppermint molesting a soft coral.

yeah i know about the tang, but i want one so bad, i just want a 1" one and i will just bring it back to the store and get a smaller one when it gets too big....the other option is that we have a 55 gallon with cichlids in it right now that we may eventually convert into saltwater...in that case we will transfer it in there.

Kawaii, the 55 gallon would be a better tank for the tang, but even at that it will be crowded. I put a Yellow Tang in my 55 when I started now I really need to get him out of there. I dont think he very happy at all. I just cant find anyone around here to take him. IMO a 90 is the minimum for a tang. Good luck with your new tank.

90 gallon minimum even with a fish under 2 inches?

Not so much for the 2", but for when it gets 8-10"

Just to nitpick for a second- I see you have a submersable heater in the back right of your tank, You may want to tilt it, they work better on a slight slant (So the tempreture line is straight)

Kawaii, is that TBS rock that i see there? if it is, odds are those aren't the fast breeding/reproducting/take over your tank in a week aiptasia's that everyone hates. I have one of those guys on my TBS rock for just about 8 months now, and i still only have one. I think i have seen them called curly q anemones and/or light bulb anemone's. There was a thread on here a while back that went on forever of people debating on what kind it was. But i can speak from experience that those guys are not bad at all (IF that is the atlantic version that comes on TBS rock). If you got the rock from a LFS i wouldn't risk it though.
