Now the question is water storage. I bought a 35 gallon trash can for the RO/DI water and have rinsed out hte trash can several times. Is this enough? Is there additional cleaning required before I use the trash can as a water storage container?

I will still use my existing 5 gallon buckets for mixing up the salt so the trash can is strictly for storage. Thanks.

Trashcans are made to hold trash. I wouldn't use any other trashcan except a Rubbermaid BRUTE which are USDA approved.

I scrubbed my two 44gals with baking soda then rinsed them out in case there was some manufacturing residue. BTW, your round Brute is actually a 32gal. They come in 10, 20, 32, 44, and 55gal

I personally use my trash can for saltwater storage so the water can "ferment" and I put a powerhead and heater in it!
