Hey, thanks for looking.

I need to find a way to adapt a better pump, say a Mag 3, to work with a CPR backpack. The rio pumps just suck and go out every 3 months or so.

If possible I'd like to overdrive the skimmer with a Mag 3 or 5 and use the pump externally. I could plumb it, but how do I get air in to the line feeding from pump to skimmer?

Thanks,

Todd

Maxi jets work well and a good price. I think a mag 3/5 might be too much for the little backpack

Great, how do you convert them to draw the air etc?

I agree Maxi Jets are very good.

Thanks,

Todd

I agree with the previous post on the maxijets. Keep in mind that too much flow can give you lots of tiny air bubbles i the return.

Great, where can you get one that is modified for the back pack?

Or, how do you modify it yourself?

Thanks,

Todd

It does not need mods. It comes with an attachment to allow air into the intake of the pump. I think that this is a pretty common mod to trash the rio and replace with a maxi.

Todd, I used this modification on a Bakpak a few years ago and it worked great. What you need to get is a venturi kit for the MaxiJet such as this:Venturi (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PA&Product_Code=MJ-VENT&Product_Count=&Category_Code=)

Or just mod the MJ using the spare parts that came with it:
Venturi Modification (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=56425)

IME I found that using a MJ900 or 600 on the Bakpak performed the best. I tried the MJ1200, and for me, it was too much flow thru the skimmer which reduced the contact time.

Doxyman, JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!

I knew that there had to be a good thread out there.

Thanks,
