macro algae going a-sexual

I know this is a dumb question but here goes. How do you know if your macro algae has gone asexual?

If it falls apart, leaving perhaps a translucent, whitish shell, it's gone.

The male plants are sleeping and the female plants look mad. ;) I saw a great pic here I think Randy had posted it and it showed the spores forming on some caulerpa.
