Who has one and are they natural? I saw 2 that looked really healthy but the sunshine yellow tenticles just didnt seem right. Wish i had the camera on me. The tenticles were yellow and the rest of the anemone white. I figured i better pass and ask first. So whats your thoughts on them? Will they turn green under "good" lighting? Thanks!

yeah there are yellow carpets. however i would be very careful and make sure it wasnt dyed. if you feel that the lfs is reputable then i would trust them because they DO exist. i have seen a coupl of them in person and they look great!

Thanks and yes this is a reputable LFS. Might just have to go down sunday and see if their still there. Price is cheaper than the ones i've seen online too! :)

Yes, they do. For a short time.. Maybe a week or two. And then they die. ALWAYS.

Thats nice info to know. Thanks! If i make it back down there i will have to see how long they've had them. Any ideas on why? Is it actually because the coloring is some sortof bleaching? Just curious.

A yellow carpet that is healthy will be a mustard color. If it is yellow like the one pictured, it has lost all of its symbiotic algae. I'm not sure I would say they always die, but the odds are are highly stacked against you. Better to take a pass on this one.

My yellow carpet stayed yellow for over a year, that was its natural color,it has not lost its symbiotic algae. They are rare to come across but are out there. I traded mine in, because it was getting to big, over a foot and a half in diameter. I don't think they can dye carpets I think there to delicate.

Yes, I've seen dyed carpets, and the reseller knew for a fact they were dyed. Dying animals is disgusting.

i must agree with you maddox. the dyed animals die very quicly but some are unknowing and they snatch them up thinking they are "rare" colors. this practice is horrible for the hobby in general.

RXDI,

Thanks for popping in with the status of your carpet. The second pictures looks like a much nicer yellow, not as translucent. The ones in the store look translucent right now but could be cause they havent settled in or under poor lighting. Man i cant make up my mind? Guess i could always pop in friday and see what they look like then. That would give them atleast a week in store and i can talk to the employees and findout when they actually got them.

The 1st picture was under 10,000k 175watt medal halides and the second picture was under 14,000k bulbs. If their translucent I wouldn't chance it I've noticed some of the dyed corals I've seen have a translucent look to them. Mine had more of a dull yellow look to it and white bands from the center to the edges. I got mine from reefcollection.com . This was over a year ago and they have a new owner now but you could give then a call and see if they can still get them. cquarium.com also is a good place for carpets but very pricey, they have a yellow Gigantea right now.

I agree with you also madox, I used to work at and lfs and had a wholesaler tell me he had an incredible neon yellow and pink carpet and when I opened pulled the bags from the shipping boxes the water of each was the the same color that they were and stained my hand after I touched the water. Not to long after getting them in they both lost their color and died.

Terrible practice. My lfs sells dyed cichlids becuase "they sell". Pathetic.

*there are NO good LFS in my area :(

How do they dye cichlids? Are they like the glow fish bred that way? I've never heard of a dyed fish.

ya, they are starting to dye patterns on freshwater fish, like diamond shapes and stuff, unbelievably ignorant. They are a shame to the hobby!!!

its disgusting. a real shame for the animals as well. i wish someone never thought of it. just leave them alone! good luck with the carpet search. make sure they have a nice rich color to make sure they havent lost their zoo.

I was just rading Julian Spring's The Reef Aquarium: Volume Two last night, and read some material pertaining to yellow carpet anemones. Apparantly, when some Green carpet Anemones bleach, they turn yellow rather than white. I am in school now, but i'll get you the quote when I get home.

FalsePerc - I have read that too. I just find it odd that mine has been the same color for 5 yrs. I would think that if mine was truely bleached it would have died by now. I will try and get a better pic. of mine tonight.

Here's a thread I started when I first purchased a small yellow gigantea that didn't make it...http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=462656

Well the shop still had one of them after almost a month so i figured i'd give it a try. It attached to some LR within minutes and mouth is fully closed. It has a beautiful blue foot and nice canary yellow tenticles. I turned off the MH for awhile to help it acclimate so the picture of it is under 50/50 PC's. Wish me luck!

Looks like it might be S. gigantea , Chuck.

I was wondering that. Tenticles seem longer than my Haddoni carpets.

Totlxtc

Oh, plus the fact that the tenticles were twice as sticky has my Haddoni and the blue column.

Beautiful anemone. I hope it does well.
Post pics of the column if you can, but don't disturb that beauty too much! She's looking good.

That Carpet looks amazing...how much did you pay? How much do they go for on line?

Totlxtc

Cquarium had one for $85 but i got mine from the LFS for $69. Plus they had it for a month so i figured it would be over its shipping stress by now. It looked 75% better today in the store than it did on Jan. 14th when i was there.

Well i dont think the little guy is going to make it. I thought i had a good chance with this one as i observed it for a month before purchasing. I hope it still pulls through but its been keeping me restless for the past 2 days. It wont eat, stays semi deflated most of the day (perks up at night?) and mouth gaps about half the time. Not sure if the clowns are helping or hurting. They have been staying away alot the past 2 days and dont host in it at night. Its still super sticky but doesnt want to fully attach to the bottom or rocks. If it would just eat again i would feel alittle bit better.

Sorry to hear that. It really is a beautiful anemone.
